1. Introductory Chemistry for Today, 7th Edition by Seager and Slabaugh (ISBN 0-538-73430-2 also accepted is the hardbound text). 2. Safety-Scale Laboratory Experiments, 7th Edition (0-538-73454-X) by Seager and Slabaugh. Both texts are available in the campus Bookstore, Wasatch Textbooks, and from the publisher, Brooks Cole. 3. Tutor CD available only from www.wasatchtextbooks.com. 4. Laboratory CD (Chem 106L only) available only from www.wasatchtextbooks.com. Assignments are due on a weekly basis, so it's important that you get the CD promptly. A calculator is needed for many homework and exam problems. An inexpensive scientific calculator will suffice. There will be a quiz on each of the chapters. Each quiz is worth 20 points. There are three major exams.. The chapter quizzes will be taken on your own computer using a testing program that gives you immediate feedback on the quiz. There are set dates for the completion of the chapter quizzes. For those dates, see your ChemWeb gradebook account. Prepare for these quizzes by completing the Tutor assignment for that specific chapter. The Tutor is discussed under Assignments. The quizzes are "open-book" but you should prepare for them as though they were not. That strategy will help you prepare and do well on the exams, which will seem much harder because they are not open book. Prepare for the exams by reviewing the Tutor assignments, the chapter quizzes, and the practice exercises. The exams are available with the supervision of a proctor. You will need a photo ID and must start the exam at least one hour before closing. The exams will be taken using the computer testing program. See the Exams site for instructions. No make up exams will be given. A schedule of exams is found in your ChemWeb gradebook account. Completion of the Tutor review for each chapter is required. Even though this assignment is not collected or graded, it will be much to your advantage to complete the Tutor reviews. The Tutor is a page-by-page commentary focusing on important concepts. If you master the Tutor, you will do very well on the chapter quizzes, and exams. Be sure to always check the "More Help/Practice" buttons in the Tutor and the "Skill Enrichment Questions" at the end of each Tutor chapter. They often highlight areas students have had questions about in the past and show alternative ways to solve problems. Practice exercises (not collected) at the end of each chapter will give you additional experience. Only even numbered exercises have been suggested, so that you can check your answers in the back of the text. Chem 106L students only - You will not be required to come to the campus to complete the laboratory portion of this course. Order a lab CD from Wasatch Textbooks. Two separate grades will be given for the lab and lecture portions of the class. Grades will be assigned on the basis of the total number of points accumulated:
The following scale based upon total course points will be used to establish grades:
At the discretion of the instructor, lower point totals may be used for certain grades.
