Three types of activities in this class(es) will be graded, including: quizzes, laboratory experiments, and exams. |
Quizzes - One quiz will be given based on the material of each chapter. Quizzes are done at home and are open book. You can enter the results and change them an unlimited number of times up until you decide to submit them for grading.
Lab Experiments - Chem 106L only - These are done from home using your lab manual and lab CD. You can also submit and change the results multiple times until you decide to submit them for final grading. Lab material will NOT be included on the exams or quizzes.
Exams - Three major exams will be given. They will be taken utilizing a testing facility or a proctor and can be accessed only once. They must be taken in a single sitting. The major exams are NOT open book. Each exam will consist of 33 multiple choice questions worth 3 points each.
|
While there are only three types of graded activities, there are other things to do that will not be turned in for a grade, but are designed to help you learn the material and prepare you for exams and quizzes. |
|
Let's begin: To begin, refer to the "Assignments" page above for the table showing which chapter and experiment you will begin with. It's chapter 1 and experiment #1. Open the Textbook: Introductory Chemistry for Today to chapter 1.
You've now completed the first quiz and laboratory experiment. You will repeat this process for the future quizzes and labs listed on the "assignments" page.

A schedule with submission deadlines for each graded item is located in ChemWeb, so you will be able to see the deadlines once you create your ChemWeb account. You are encouraged to create this account early in the class so you know the due dates for all assignments. You don't need to wait until you take your first quiz to create your account so do it as early as possible. We allow students to work ahead, but we do not allow late work. Plan now to work a bit ahead of schedule so if you run into unexpected delays, you don't fall behind. | |||||||||||
|
Once you understand how to complete the quizzes and lab experiments, you will want to learn more about the exams. There are three exams throughout the semester. Refer to the "assignments" table to see what chapters they will cover. They are not comprehensive exams and will only cover the material listed. See the "exams" page for more information about arranging for a proctor if you are located50 miles or more from a USD testing center. Please be sure to check your email often. We will send class information throughout the semester. In the beginning we will send your email to the email address you have on file with USD. After week one we will begin emailing to the email address you use when you create your ChemWeb account. So, be sure to use a good email address when you create your account, one that you will use often. That's about it in a nut shell. If you find you are still a bit confused, read the more detailed tabs above and if you continue to have questions, please feel free to contact me so I can help you get started and be successful in the class. |
